Si tratta di uno pseudonimo. Prima che iniziassi a scrivere romanzi erotici, scrivevo libri per adolescenti, e volevo assicurarmi che le due cose rimanessero distinte e separate! Ho scelto il nome Sierra perché è la strada dove sono cresciuta e Simone perché è il mio secondo nome. :)
It's a pseudonym. Before I started writing erotic novels, I was writing traditionally published books for teenagers, and I wanted to make sure the two were very separate! I chose the name because Sierra is the street I grew up on and Simone is my middle name :)

Ho iniziato a scrivere a un’età molto precoce, ma ho venduto il mio primo libro a ventiquattro anni. Amavo scrivere libri per adolescenti, ma avevo sempre avuto il sogno di scrivere una versione di Jane Eyre in chiave erotica…ed è così che è nata la serie Markham Hall! La mia famiglia lo sa e mi sostiene…sebbene mio padre mi abbia detto che anche se orgoglioso del mio successo, non ha il coraggio di leggere i miei libri! Mia nonna che è molto religiosa la pensa allo stesso modo!
I started writing from a very early age, but I didn't sell my first book until I was twenty-four. I loved writing books for teenagers, but I had this fantasy about writing a version of Jane Eyre that had lots of sex in it...and that's how I wrote the Markham Hall series! My family knows and they are very supportive...although my dad told that even though he's proud of my success, he isn't brave enough to read my books! My very religious grandmother said the same!

Where did your stories come from? How is a typical day for a successful writer as you?
La maggior parte delle mie storie hanno bisogno di molto tempo per essere chiare nella mia mente e scaturiscono da un insieme di cose diverse. I libri che sto leggendo o la musica che amo o i posti che ho visitato, penso che il cervello di un autore sia come preparare un tè, gli ingredienti vengono aggiunti man mano per poi fare l’infusione e dare vita a qualcosa di nuovo e delizioso.
Quasi tutti i giorni, cerco di scrivere 2,000 parole. Alcuni giorni di più, altri di meno. Svolgo inoltre l’attività di editor sui manoscritti di altri autori e la ghostwriter nei ritagli di tempo. Aggiungiamo la famiglia, il karate, la chiesa, e di solito cerco di fare tutto freneticamente prima di andare a dormire! Ma vale la pena lottare, se poi riesco a fare la cosa che amo di più: scrivere.
Most of my stories take a long time to come together in my head--and they blend together from lots of different things. Books I'm reading or music I love or places I visited--I think an author's brain is like a tea--stuff gets added in and then steeps and brews together into something new and delicious.
Most days, I try to write 2,000 words. Some days it's more, some days it's less. I also copyedit other author's manuscripts and do some ghost-writing on the side. Add in a family, karate, and church, and I'm usually frantically trying to get everything done by bedtime! But it's worth all the struggle to do the one thing I love most: write.

Mi piacerebbe molto! L’agente che si occupa dei diritti per i paesi stranieri sta cercando di vendere il libro ad un editore italiano, ma sembra molto più probabile che non accada, penso che Priest sia troppo controverso per la pubblicazione con un editore tradizionale in Italia.
I would love to! My foreign rights agent is still trying to sell the book to an Italian publisher, but it looks more and more like maybe that won't happen--I think Priest might just be too controversial to publish with a traditional publisher in Italy.

I haven't heard about this! I will definitely investigate. If my foreign rights agent decides that there's little likelihood of us publishing traditionally in Italy, then we will definitely do something like this!
Hai iniziato la tua carriera di scrittrice pubblicando la Markham Hall series ma le lettrici italiane ti conoscono soprattutto per il romanzo Priest: A Love Story. Come è nata l'idea di scrivere un romanzo erotico con un prete?
You started your career as a writer with The Markham Hall series but Italian readers know you above all for you novel: Priest. A Love Story. How did the idea of writing an erotic novel about a priest come to you?
Priest l’ho scritto perché sono cresciuta nella fede cattolica, ma anche perché avevo da poco visitato Weston (una piccola città vinicola sul fiume Missouri) e perché stavo leggendo molti libri sulla sessualità del passato. Poi tutto mi è apparso chiaro, mi sono seduta a scrivere il prologo dal punto di vista di Padre Bell, ed è semplicemente venuto fuori dalla pagina, bell’e pronto!
Priest I wrote because I grew up Catholic, but also because I had recently visited Weston (a small winery town on the Missouri River) and because I had been reading a lot of books about ancient sexuality. And then it all came together, and I sat down to write the prologue as Father Bell, and he just sort of leapt off the page, fully formed!
Priest è stato pubblicato in tedesco e francese, pensi che verrà pubblicato anche in Italia o le case editrici italiane non saranno abbastanza coraggiose visto il contenuto scottante?
The novel Priest was published in French and German, do you think that will be released in Italy or Italian Publishers will not be brave enough, considered the hot topic?
Penso che forse i francesi e i tedeschi siano meno preoccupati degli aspetti generali della religione cattolica. Ma è interessante, che i due paesi stranieri dove ho più fan, Italia e Brasile, sono i paesi dove gli editori tradizionali sono molto titubanti nel voler acquisire i diritti di Priest.
I think that maybe the French and the Germans are less bothered by the Catholicism aspect in general. But interestingly, the two foreign countries that I have the most fans from--Italy and Brazil--are the countries where traditional publishers have been very nervous about acquiring Priest.

Someone compared your book Priest to The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough. What do you think of this statement? Had you read it?
Non l’ho mai letto, anche se ho visto la serie televisiva molto tempo fa. Ma credo che non abbiano cose in comune! Perché noi non vogliamo vedere solo un prete rompere i voti, vogliamo vederlo innamorarsi davvero, di un amore profondo. Innamorarsi così profondamente da non avere scelta che rompere i voti. Penso che sia quel momento in cui ci si sente nervosi, felici, spaventati e tutta quella sorta di emozioni confuse - che è ciò che ci dovrebbe far scegliere un buon romance!
I haven't read it, although I saw the television series a long time ago. But I do think there's something to that! Because we don't just want to see a priest break his vows, we want to see him fall in real, deep love. Fall so deeply in love that he has no choice but to break his vows. I think that's when we feel all nervous and happy and scared and all sorts of confusing emotions--which is what a good romance should make us choose!
Al di là del romanzo erotico, affronti anche tematiche importanti come gli abusi sessuali e la castità per i preti. Cosa ne pensi al riguardo?
Beyond the erotic novel, you cover the issues of sexual abuse and celibacy in the priesthood. What do you think about that?
Penso sia possibile, essere un cattolico e avere giustizia dalla Chiesa. Credo che sia possibile amare Dio e chiedere sicurezza e responsabilità. E credo che sia importante per le persone di fede amare Dio e battersi contro gli abusi e gli scandali, perché in fin dei conti, Gesù ci chiede di proteggere coloro che non possono proteggersi. A mio avviso, penso che Dio sia sconvolto dai predatori sessuali e gli insabbiamenti, e vorrebbe vedere la Sua chiesa lavorare per un cambiamento di questa insana cultura che ha permesso tutti quei crimini.
Abusi a parte, penso che il celibato sia un altro aspetto della Chiesa che dovrebbe essere ridiscusso. Il celibato è legato a molti scopi, uno dei quali è stato ottimizzare il reddito della chiesa medioevale (Era costoso mantenere le mogli dei preti e i loro figli.) E’ anche legato alla teologia paolina, gran parte della quale dovrebbe essere riesaminata alla luce del ventunesimo secolo. I ministri protestanti possono sposarsi e avere una famiglia e continuare a fare i pastori del loro gregge, credo che per i preti non sia diverso. Credo anche che più persone diventerebbero preti se potessero anche sposarsi.
I think that it's possible to be a faithful Catholic and demand justice from the Church. I think that it's possible to love God and still demand safety and accountability. I think it's important for people of faith to stand up to abuse and scandal, because at the end of the day, Jesus demands that we protect those who cannot protect themselves. I personally think God is appalled by all the predation and cover-ups, and wants to see His church work to change the toxic culture that enabled all those crimes.
Abuse aside, I think celibacy is another aspect of the Church that needs to be re-examined. Celibacy is bound up with lots of multivalent purposes--one of which was streamlining income for the medieval Church (it was expensive to support priests' wives and children.) It's also bound up in Pauline theology, a lot of which should be re-examined through the lens of the Twenty First Century. Protestant ministers are able to be married and have families and still pastor their flock--I believe priests are no different. I also believe that more people would like to be priests if they could also marry.
E' stato difficile scrivere questo romanzo dal punto di vista maschile per di più un prete?
Did you find difficult to write a novel from a male point of view of a priest?
Io amo il punto di vista maschile! È difficile a volte pensare come farebbe un uomo, ma è anche molto divertente. Gli uomini pensano più al sesso, e al corpo, e pensano anche in modo più semplice. Quando diventa difficile, chiedo molto a mio marito, “Sarebbe da uomo questo? O che dire di questo?”
I love male point of view! It is difficult sometimes to think as a man would, but it is also a lot of fun. Men think about sex more, and bodies, and they also think in a more straightforward way. Sometimes it's tricky--I ask my husband a lot, "Would a man think this? Or what about this?"
Se anche il tuo romanzo Priest diventasse una miniserie quale attore sceglieresti per impersonare Padre Bell? E per Poppy, la protagonista femminile?
If your novel Priest would become a TV series, which actors would you like as Father Bell and Poppy?
Sono davvero davvero davvero innamorata dell’attrice inglese Felicity Jones. Qualcosa in lei è così dannatamente sexy a mio avviso. Mentre per Tyler Bell, sono indecisa, ma mi piacciono molto Theo James e Nick Bateman…o qualcuno come loro.

We know that you wrote a novel called Porn Star in collaboration with Laurelin Paige. Can you describe us how this cooperation started? How was it to co-write a novel?
Laurelin ed io abbiamo condiviso delle gif di natura sessuale molto esplicite su Tumblr per molto tempo, e siamo sempre state curiose delle vite dei protagonisti di quelle gif. Hanno dei coniugi? Compagni? Si sono mai innamorati sul set? Così abbiamo avuto l’idea di scrivere una storia su due attori porno che s’innamorano mentre continuano a lavorare con altre persone. È una storia sexy, dolorosa, divertente, e naturalmente, con un lieto fine.
Laurelin and I have been sharing naughty porn gifs from Tumblr for a long time, and we have always been curious about the lives of the people in those gifs. Do they have spouses? Partners? Do they ever fall in love on set? So we got the idea to write about two porn stars who fall in love with each other...while still trying to make porn with other people. It's sexy and heartbreaking and funny, and of course, with a happily ever after.

In questo momento, sto lavorando a una rivisitazione della storia di Re Artù, Lancilotto e Ginevra. Si tratta di una storia contemporanea su un menage à trois provvisoriamente intitolato American Queen.
Right now, I'm working on a retelling of King Arthur, Lancelot and Guinevere. It's a modern day menage a trois story tentatively titled American Queen.
